Due to recent flooding and highway damage, 2013 Gran Fondo Highwood Pass Presented by GSL GM City is heading to the scenic David Thompson Highway! We’ve worked hard over the last several days to find a location that would offer up a riding experience on par with Highwood Pass. We think we’ve found it. We’ll ride 136km from the David Thompson Resort in Cline River, Alberta along scenic David Thompson Highway to the finish in Rocky Mountain House.We became familiar with Cline River after hosting the Canadian Rockies Heli Run here in 2012.
Several members of our staff hit the road last September and instantly fell in love. With the recent flooding and the closure of Highway 40 it became obvious that Highwood Pass would be impassible for the foreseeable future. The folks at Alberta Transportation, the town of Rocky Mountain House and the David Thompson Resort have to be commended for working so hard to make this happen for our riders! Thank you!

Start: David Thompson Resort, Highway 11. Directions from Calgary HERE.
The Route: A spectacular 136km from the resort along the David Thompson Highway. With towering mountains to your left and beautiful Abraham Lake to your right, you will follow a fast (418m of climbing, 812m descending) and rolling route out of the Rockies and into the foothills all the way to Rocky Mountain House. Monarcha de Montagna: It’s no Highwood Pass but those riders with the fastest times to the top of the climb at kilometre 39 mark will be rewarded with the coveted Polka Dot Jersey. The competitive age groups are the same for both men and women: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50+.

Pre Race: Rocky Arena Complex, Rocky Mountain House to David Thompson Resort start line. Departure 6:30 AM. 1.5 hour transfer.
Post Race: Rocky Arena Complex, Rocky Mountain House finish line to David Thompson Resort. Departure 4:00 PM. 1.5 hour transfer.

We recognize that the above solution will not be convenient for everyone, but we have done our best to offer an equivalent experience to the originally planned Gran Fondo Highwood Pass. The reality of the event business is that the majority of your registration fee is spent well before you reach the starting line. Planning normally takes place over the course of a year and we have a responsibility to pay for staff, deposits, vendors, permits, materials, jerseys, etc regardless of whether the event takes place. As a result, as per our refund policy, we will not be offering refunds for this event or transfers to another event. Riders may transfer their entry to another rider subject to a $20 admin fee.
